Why Restore Your Exterior Timber?

Let’s face it, your home, like your health, is one of your most important assets, so keeping it in good nick is imperative. With so many horror stories about leaky buildings, TimberTECH also plays an integral role in keeping your home weather tight by maintaining the original water- repellent qualities of your timber.

Cedar is a premium cladding system and one of the best money can buy. It has better insulation properties than brick or concrete and superior weather tightness to many other products. TimberTECH’s system will not only keep your house looking great all the time, you’ll never have to worry about the expense of replacing your cladding, garage door or decking.

Increase The Value Of Your Home

Restoring your exterior timber also adds value to your home? In our experience, for every $1 spent restoring your exterior cladding, your property will return about $4 in increased property value. So, whether you want to spruce up your home to make it more appealing for prospective buyers, or to extend its lifespan so it’ll cost you less in the long run, it sure pays to give your home that extra bit of TLC!

How much will it cost?

When compared to the alternatives - painting or replacing the timber – customers often can’t believe how little it costs and the enormous difference we make. To fully restore an average three-bedroom home, in a wide choice of colours, will usually cost around $4,500, depending on the existing coatings. It will normally only take about a week for us to complete the ‘extreme makeover’, so what better time to get it done than right now?

The Restoration Process

Step1: Cleaning the timber

Once exposed to the weather, the surface of any timber will deteriorate over time. When timber turns silver, it’s a sign that it’s getting on – similar to humans’ hair when we grow old. Fortunately, this isn’t detrimental to the wood itself, but indicates that it should be treated before too long. As the timber ages, air-born mould, fungus, dust and dirt will settle on the timber’s surface and darken the wood over time, giving it a bleak, unappealing look.

The sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays and intense heat are even more damaging – they extract the natural oils from the timber, eventually causing it to shrink, cup and twist. In severe cases, the timber will twist or pull through the fixings, which may lead to waterproofing issues –nothing like dealing with a leaky home!

This is where TimberTECH comes in. To stop any further deterioration, we thoroughly treat the timber with a deep cleansing Bio Degradable wash, removing dirt and killing mould and fungus. We don’t use any harsh bleaches, chemicals or high-pressure water blasting and we won’t damage your timber in the process – we effectively renew its surface.

Step 2: Sealing and protecting the timber

Once cleaned, the timber is sealed to protect it from the elements and prevent moisture from seeping in. We generally use a deep-penetrating oil, which gives the timber a rich, long-lasting, uniform tone. We also take care to cover any concrete or paved areas and plants during the sealing process. Two coats of oil may be required for the driest areas, after which the oil is allowed to migrate deep into the timber over a 9- to 12-month period, depending on the type of timber, location etc.

The sealers are available in a wide range of colours, so you’re not limited to the natural brown colour of the original timber. In fact, we often apply a contemporary black or even a silver sealer if you prefer to retain a weathered look.

Will it stay that way?
