Houses with natural timber exteriors are usually either stained or oiled. Stain and oil are not the same thing... they are both effective but both work very differently when treating your timber:
- Wood oil prolongs the good looks and weather resistance of your Cedar by penetrating deeply into the Cedar, replacing the natural oils lost over time.
- Traditional stains sit on top of the timber and act as a barrier to the elements without replacing the lost oils.
- Modern stains act both as a barrier and like an oil, yet not with the same penetrating effectiveness as a pure wood oil.
What you need to know is that both treatments require regular recoating for adequate Cedar protection.
A TimberTECH technician can quickly assess what options will work best then it’s up to you to choose colour and type of treatment.
